********Happiness is Just a Decision Away *********

What would you say if I told you that – To be happy is a decision you can make right now and be happy no matter what? Would your first response be- Could it really be that simple? My answer is yes -it can be that simple. Maybe not so easy but simple.

We make hundreds of decisions all day- when to get up in the morning- what to eat- what route to take to work- when to mail a bill, to name a few. When we are making these decisions, we are choosing to do these items and for the most part no one is making those decisions for us. Right? So why can’t we get up in the morning and say to ourselves- I am deciding to be happy today no matter what. Remember in my July newsletter – I mentioned setting your intention to love yourself and others every day. I had you put your loving intention on the top of your to-do list so now just add one more item to your to-do list to be happy today along side that intention. Remember no one or thing can make you happy- it is up to you. It will be your decision to be happy and smile! With that in mind let me share an experience I had last month.

Last month in Toastmasters, I competed in a Division level Speech contest representing my area. In the past when I have competed, I usually experienced a roller coaster ride of emotions before, during, and after. I was normally wiped out after I competed. This time I made the decision to be happy before, during, and after the contest. And I let go of any non-loving emotions that were to the contrary. When the day arrived, I even added loving the experience to my being happy. Wow, I was able to maintain that feeling – no roller coaster ride this time and I was full of energy after the contest. I did not wait for the results of the competition to be happy. I came in third place and easily embraced my third place win. I was not upset I did not come in first place- however, I was happy for myself and everyone that had competed. I walked away from the contest feeling great. My happiness did not depend on my winning. What a freeing experience! In the past, I have not been that happy about competing because of that emotional roller coaster ride- and would tell myself never again. Now -I am telling myself- sure why not!

With holidays just around the corner- make the decision today to be happy every day through out the holiday season. You know it is the season of JOY- give yourself the choice to enjoy it!

***November’s Joyful Tip

During the days leading up to Thanksgiving or Christmas, we can become overwhelmed with all that we feel that needs to be done. Make a list of the things that normally overwhelm you this time of year. Now see if you can do things a little different. For instance- If you are the one that always has the big dinner at your home, then ask for help with preparing the food. Make it a potluck or have someone else cook it and bring it over. Or even choose to go out to dinner and then return back to your home for dessert- this way you can still have that home-cooked holiday feeling and family time. Ask for help and suggestions from the other people involved. This will give them a chance to be part of the big day, too – other then just setting down to the meal you have prepared. Being open to do things differently and asking for support might be the two biggest things you can do for yourself, that is, after you have decided to be happy everyday throughout the holiday season. Try it, you might just-Enjoy It!

***November’s Joyful Tip for the Work Place

The season of giving is nearly upon us. Everyone at your workplace is probably feeling the pressure of the economy right now. You might be experiencing some down sizing or lay offs. Fear might be the only emotion you and your co-workers are experiencing at work right now. Along with the other Joyful Tips I have shared with you in my earlier newsletters, step into courageousness and be the beacon of happiness at your job. First decide to be happy, then at the bottom of every email you send out to your co-workers add a happy quote. Change the quote everyday. See if you notice more smiles on your co-workers faces. You can start with this one.

“If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
Chinese Proverb

Here is a website I discovered with many ideal happy quotes- don’t be afraid to create a few of your own. www.inspirational-quotes-and-quotations.com/happy-life-quotes.html
